Keepers

These foxgloves grow near my front door every year. I titled the images after the house itself - Keepers Cottage - formerly a gamekeeper's residence. To me the foxgloves themselves are sentinel-like, custodians of place, 'keepers' in their own way. I like the play on words in attributing this title to them - it makes me think about what a 'keeper' can be, or should be, or should not be. The foxgloves keep time, they keep watch, they keep decaying and regrowing. They keep the bees happy. Perhaps they keep a form of history, as chemical signatures of their predecessors and the shifting ecosystem around them. They keep well here, and - in spite of their toxicity - they will be kept.
